Please don't assume that what tastes good to you tastes good to all.  For the last 20 years I have sampled R.I. Greening in various states of ripeness as grown on various sites, properly thinned and tended and have never tasted one that particularly appeals to me.  In that time we've had enough variation in climate to represent what that apple will do over a pretty wide area.  Around here most people only use this apple for cooking simply because they don't find it very appealing as a fresh apple.  That's why it's gone out of fashion, most people no longer bake and if they do the recipe probably calls for Granny Smith.  It certainly hasn't fallen out of favor with growers for production reasons!
One persons opinion is just that and it's wonderful to really like any apple and to want to share your pleasure.  That said, I'm still curious whether someone who raves about this apple is comparing it to a wide range of other tart varieties.  Maybe it's just that I'm tired of watching this apple go to waste on sites I manage because almost no one seems to like it.  I should actually put together a list of productive apples that tend to go to waste around here.  It sucks to have fruit that you can't even give away.  Still, I imagine that for every apple there is someone.  I sure don't mean to come off as a taste snob.
