Do you have wild Vitis riparia in the area? The survivors might have been the result of a chance cross between the Concord and a Vitis riparia. The small cluster and berry size of riparia comes through rather strongly, so the result could be something with a resemblance to Valiant. I have several labrusca-riparia hybrids in my material and there is a definite "family resemblance" if you aren't looking for the differences. But the parentage of Valiant is well documented as Fredonia x Vitis riparia.

Back in the days when I didn't know Valiant grapes existed, I planted
Concord. I nursed my plants through a Winter so I could get seed, which I
subsequently planted. A few of the seeds grew and thrived. Now that I also
have Valiant too, I can't tell which is which; they are identical. Could it
be that Valiant is really only hardy offspring of Concord?
