I have no experience with figs, but I wonder would one of these fruit
pickers do the job.

I use one for pears and it works very well. Around here you can get them at
True Value and also Home Depot (I think). Or you can just order the basket
part on-line and mount it to your own pole. BTW, they work better to push
the fruit into the basket rather than pull. What I mean is when you get the
basket underneath the fruit, push up and the stem will break loose causing
the fruit to fall in the basket. If you try to pull using the claws, it can
be a little hard on the fruit.
