Thanks for all your feedback about my
Lyman’s Large Summer apple – Doug - I’ll let everyone know
how they are when fully ripe. Right now, the seeds are still white, but the
apples are perfectly edible IMO. We made a pie already and it came out
pretty good. The tree has been bearing for about three years, although it
is big for a dwarf, at least 15’ across and a good 8’ high. I
planted the tree in fall 2001; it was “bearing age” from
Southmeadow. I don’t know what rootstock it is, but it is very
solid, probably 6” diameter now, and certainly does not need staking.
This is the first year with a decent number of fruit, since I was more
aggressive with spraying and bagging. Dennis – yes, I’ve been
wondering about the bags too. At the moment I think it’s unlikely
to be the cause of the apples dropping. There are unbagged apples on the tree
that drop too. And I have other varieties that are bagged and none are
dropping. I can’t see any moisture collecting in the stem pit area,
and the baggie is usually slightly open there. But, it could be a
contributing factor. I should try the footies sometime, but baggies are
so much cheaper and easy to come by. David – that’s just what I was
wondering, if Lyman’s was just generally “sensitive.” Last
year, I was not as good with spraying and the tree had some scab…it
dropped a good portion of leaves and about 95% of the apples. So this
year, I switched from sulfur to captan and kept on it. The tree has no
scab, and just the tiniest bit of cedar-apple rust, so it looks good. There are
some curled leaves at the ends of the branches, though, but it does not look worrisome
to me. Many, though not all, of the apples that drop have some defects; a
few, for example, had pretty noticeable water core. You are right, it has been extremely dry
here, and I have been suspicious about that, since my trees are in raised beds,
making them dry out even more. So this year I put in a drip irrigation
system and have been running it twice a day, generally (about 5 gallons per dwarf
tree per day). Maybe I need to water even more. Thanks again! Mark |
