Got distracted and didn't finish that last letter before sending it. Here's the full answer.

Once the graft takes, you could remove ALL the other growth from the vine. Let it throw all it's vigor into the graft and you should be able to develop a mature-sized vine in one season. You could take off at least 75% of the rootstock growth even now, and keep pinching new shoots as they show up. Let the graft "have it's way" and it will grow well. Next winter, take off all the material but the graft. The only reason to not remove all of the wild grape shoots now is that this late in the season the vine might grow so much it wouldn't have time to harden off well before fall frost. Leave some of the wild vine now so that it will syphon off enough vigor from the graft to allow it to slow down and harden off properly in time.

An admittedly strange time of year to be asking this question, but last
year I had grafted a not so vigorous seedless grape onto a large wild grape
volunteer (5 inch diameter at the base) which had draped itself over several
trees. The graft, which has several stems several feet long and has one
bunch of grapes hanging from it, probably represents less than 1% of the
topgrowth of the plant. Next winter, can the vine be pruned back so as to
leave only the graft, or must this be done in stages?
