Steve, I agree that Royalty is not good eaten fresh; in fact I find it
downright nasty. However, I think Royalty makes some of the best purple
raspberry jam and ice cream topping I've ever eaten. -- Sam Brungardt,

I got both Thibideau (Sp?) and Fort Kent from the Heron and Fedco folks.
Thibideau didn't make it through the first winter (or was it the weeds
it had for company?) which reached at least -25 last year. Fort Kent (I
think that was the name, it was Fort-something-or-other) looks like
it'll take over pastures from here to North Carolina. The fruit is
better than the local seedling stock.

I put the Fort Kent into the spot I tore out all of the Royalty purple
raspberries--vigorous, fairly hardy, and nasty-tasting enough to
discard. Royalty is a great example of a fruit which has great press,
but doesn't do well in every garden.

Steve Herje, Lone Rock, WI USDA zone 3--alkaline sand
