<P.S.  I remember some NAFEXer who was growing a peach tree horizontally in some northern state, the snow would cover the tree and keep it reasonably warm.  Maybe you could figure out some way to simply lay your potted trees on their side and cover them, then heave them back into place when the cold passed.<<

I have several baby paw paw trees. I am in zone 4 Iowa where the winters can be minus 30/40 below. some years we have 8 feet of snow and some years we don't have more than a dusting several times and one or two big snows. And of course the occasional ice storm that destroys everything. I hope the day comes that these "trees" are too big to haul in and out. Do you think I could plant them sideways and mulch them with straw? Or ???? What could I  do? It isn't a worry for a few years yet. They are all under 18 inches tall right now. They have done the best on the floor under the upstairs south window. There is sun there and I was very worried about it over the winter but the sun must not have been too strong. Now that it's summer I have moved them away from the window a few feet and they are growing great.

I was surprised at the various amounts of time it took them to releaf this spring. The last two didn't show green until a couple of weeks ago. I've had them spread out in various parts of the house but have decided the second story south window is the best. They need to be repotted. I want to get some tall narrow pots. Will I find clay pots that shape? Right now most are in plastic pots about 6 or 8 inches tall. What size should I go for next? Would it be OK to go ahead and get a big pot for them at this stage? I'm sure the tap root has curled around the bottom of the pot but I also don't expect to be able to have a pot tall enough that the root won't do this.
