I agree, its sounds like racoons.
Clever, omnivorous, hands that can open latches (they have fingers), brains that
can figure things out. Near where I live, there is a national park and many many
protected racoons. You kill one, the next one follows, and there is a saying
that the next racoon can smell on the tracks of the previous racoon the
meal that the previous dead racoon had.
Believe or not, they
actually pull open corn cobs to check whether the corn is ripe. Not
ripe?, they leave it for another day and move on to the next plant.... Racoons
are the only animals that I have ever shot out of exasperation!
