You might check for cankers too just above the branch
that's still alive. No personal experience on that
one but they do get a fungal canker sometimes. My
raspberries haven't gotten the cane borers (yet!) but
I do get a fungal canker that girdles them sometimes
when they start to ripen like Jim describes. Most of
mine get heavy dews at night and no sun until about
9:30 AM which is a recipe for disease problems if you
don't bother with any fungicides.
