Donna,
An 1 1/2" intake pipe is pretty big.
If you can see a deflection in the intake pipe you
may be losing a lot of the energy that should go to
driving the ram. Try anchoring the intake pipe or
possibly use a rigid ( galvanized ).
I changed from PVC to Gal. this year and it made a big
difference.

Thanks for the hope Michael. They don't list a phone, but suggest the best

Sarah Van Fleet is a terrific rose. It is very resistant to disease, immune to blackspot and does well on its own roots. It's fragrance is not strong, but is pleasant. It also blooms throughout the summer and fall, though it's main show is in the spring when it puts out an amazing number of 3-4 inch diameter double pink blossoms.

Any recommendations for own root, old roses w/fragrance & disease resistance (mid-atlantic)?
Am presently considering for next year:
Louise Odier, Belle de crecy, marie pavie, marchesea boccella, felicite parmentier, rosa moschata, rosa primula, reine des violettes, great maidens blush. Would souvenir de la malmaison be blackspot resistant?

Thanks! That sounds like what I have. That's not worth keeping, so
I'll dig it out when I get around to it.

I prefer own-rooted roses, to, and that's what I buy, but this one
was a gift, and I planted it late enough in the year that rooting a
cutting wouldn't have been an option even if I'd thought of it.

Yasi, I ordered plants from Badgersett and they arrived about a month ago,
all seem alive and healthy. I think yours will probably arrive soon. It's
always possible something went wrong with your order, so you might contact
them. Donna

Anton, I have seen a rose here that I'm pretty sure was Sarah Van Fleet,
and it was pretty impressive looking. However, Rugosas don't like our clay
soil, and I'm not interested in growing them, seeing as I make my living as
a massage therapist. Even my thorniest varieties, the kordesii roses have
spaces between the thorns. I know someone who has rugosas that do well, and
they look good no matter what, even with Jap beetles all over them till you
get up really close. Dona

Thank you for all the helpful advice! My husband got out the ram pump he
put together over 10 years ago, which we have never needed till now. He and
my son spent a hot afternoon sloshing around in the shade in the cold spring
fed creek (a thankless task but someone has to do it.) They put everything
together using pipe we'd bought in years past for other purposes. The pump
would start and stop, and did worse on the second day, but straightening out
the intake pipe helped. They sat and watched the 100' of 1 1/2" intake pipe
and noted that it creates a rhythm of it's own, the water running smooth and
steady, then becoming chaotic and jerky, without the pump even attached.
There are some small holes in the intake pipe which may be creating
turbulence, but they also allow air to escape. They've blocked and
unblocked those holes repeatedly, with inconclusive results. Any comments
on this might be helpful. I note that some say to bring the water to a box
and get all the drop in one go to the pump.
My son's been looking on the Net for the latest on Ram pumps and has
done some modifications, using a spring loaded valve to replace a simple one
way valve. We have a crummy little brand X impellor pump, wish it was a
Shurflo, but it's based on the same principles. I figure if we can get the
water partway up the slope into a big barrel, we can get it the rest of the
way with the 12V pump and a deep cycle battery. In the meanwhile, we
actually got a whole inch of rain yesterday, so the garden shouldn't keel
over dead till the weekend. The ram pump is by far the cheapest solution
to our problem, and the marvel of having seen it in action is enough to keep
us working at it.
Typically we have enough water delivered via the sky to make do, but
not this year. We've had just over 12" rain in the first 6 mo of the year,
under half of normal with much higher than normal evaporation. The ground
is so dry that I found it was still dry an inch or two down even after the
rain. It was in time to save the wild blackberries though. The bushes are
loaded, but some were just shriveling up and dying in the drought. I was
figuring on making wine as there is no other fruit this year.

It suddenly died, mid-fruiting. The berries were just getting blue, and
over a matter of days the entire plant browned, dried out and seemingly
died. All the leaves are a leathery tan color, and on the plant are
little dehydrated blueberries. Its neighbor plant, also about 10 years
old, is going strong, and producing yummies. Both plants are in
planters, in fog belt of San Francisco CA, and have never really been
fertilized at all.

What could have befallen plant number 1, and is plant number 2 at risk?

Possibly thrips? That sounds like what thrips does to my roses and I
know that thrips hit more than roses...
