Just about any organic matter will decompose and release humic acids, forming acidic compost. How much it affects your soil pH depends on the soil type, buffering capacity, and amount of compost added. Clay soils with high lime concentrations will be very difficult to lower pH, while sandy soils without lime may be easily acidified.

I added compost made with oak leaves as the major carbon source to my vegetable garden for about 15 years without any decrease in the ph of my soil

I was wondering if anyone knew if the comments you always hear about oak leaves acidifying the soil is true or if it's similar to pine needles in that it depends on what kind of soil the tree is growing in.
