I harvest my garlic when the fifth leaf from the top starts to brown. Each leaf represents a wrapper.The white papery skin. Garlic for storage and appearence should have 4 to 5 good wrappers. A dead leaf wrapper just crumbles away. It is said that if you waite till the curl starts to straighten on the bloom stalk it will store longer. I always just cut them off when they shoot up. If I have plenty of garlic I will select the largest bulbs to replant.
I am about two weeks from harvest here in Southern Ohio
