The first honeybees I had when I lived in CA 50 years ago were the German black bees.  I requeened them with the more gentle Italians.  I never want them again.  There are also Carniolans which are a gray and black bee.  They have a gentle disposition.  The Caucasian bees are also gray and black and are gentle.  I tend to want to stay with the Italians since I had a bad experience with the old German bees.

Lucky,  Even the wild populations seem to go up and down.  In general we
figure that the mostly black bees are wild, and that the ones with two or
more gold stripes probably have owners.  Anyone have any comments on the
coloration of most wild honeybees?  They probably always have a lot of the
old German strain in them.   A friend had some bees he'd been given, he
complained they were flighty, nervous, prone to stinging, and black.  Sound
like German bees?      Donna
