I planted some melons last night to set out in a few
weeks, got to have something! I'm amazed at the
difference between various plants. One asian pear has
all melted shoots, another with shoots nearly as long
12 feet away appears fine so far, I can't see any
difference in microclimate maybe bacteria colonizing
leaves or variety differences, who knows. Certainly
some species were much less affected - my sour
cherries seem to have foliage intact while the peach
foliage is all wilted. I think I managed to save one
6 foot dwarf apple covered in blooms with a 100 watt
bulb and a bucket of warm water under blankets and a
tarp. Only problem is all the other flowers are dead,
so how's it going to be pollinated? Is pollen in
frozen flowers still viable? The open strawberry
blossoms were hit despite blankets and tarps,
hopefully not all buds got nailed. Only time will
tell. You'd think this would kill the bugs at least,
I thought maybe the tent caterpillars were dead, as
they were all limp this morning, but by afternoon they
were busy munching away again...I recorded 18 here
Saturday night, the old record low was 26. Zone 5b/6
Central MO.
