The Treasure Valley of Idaho is a commercial apple growing area and has been
for many years. Commercial apples of this area include, Red and Yellow
Delicious, Fuji, Jonagold, Rome, Ginger gold, Jonathan, Granny Smith and
Gala.

I personally have Keepsake which is a MN 447 x Northern Spy which matures
tasty and crisp consistently here. We do have cool nights. Grimes tastes
good here. However Cox and some of its relatives do not like it and do not
taste well in our conditions.

100 degrees?

no apple (at least none I am familiar with) like 100 degree temperatures -
but they will tolerate them in an immature state - it is the temps the last
few days/weeks before harvest that matter - if those Baldwins are a week
from harvest and the days are 90* and the night 75* they will turn soft and
greasy, having never developed good quality - that they are dark red means
that the sun will heat them beyond air temp, so if it is 90* and sunny,
they will cook on the tree, never developing good quality -

I'm not familiar with MN 447, but I'd wager the same general principles
apply -

for consistant apple quality from year to year, look to varieties that
mature in the season when the days are bright and cool and the nights are
crisp - yellow is better than red in hot climes -

regards - D
