I got this from a fruit researcher at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks:
"When I was in Russia a few years ago, I learned they had 5 different
species of Lonicera under cultivation, and I got to taste some of the
sweet sauce. In fact, everything there was horribly sweet. For dessert
one day, my hosts set in front of me a very large soup bowl full of
honeysuckle sauce. It was extremely sweet and I was expected to eat the
whole thing- not as a topping on something else, but straight up! I had
a good case of lockjaw at the end, but it did have a good flavor. I
thought there were only 5 until the people at the germplasm repository
in Corvallis published a paper on all the introductions. It was
impressive. I don't have all the names in front of me, but when I find
that article I'll send it to you. Lonicera edulis is considered the
worst of the batch- very tart, foxy."
Does anyone know if any of these Lonicera's are available commercially?
And, if so, who sells them? Thanks.
