     Rooting of dormant apple varies like crazy amongst varieties/types.  Also the cuttings MUST be taken at the beginning of dormacy or around early-mid November.  Otherwise those harmones responsible for root initiation have moved on down to the roots.
 
     If you want to give it a try, I think M7 apple would root easily and perhaps N. Spy.
