Here on the Illinois-Wisconsin border, 80 miles northwest of Chicago, fall is already here, about a month early. We had 30F last night and the previous night. Trees started developing color in late August, apples are holding on trees longer than usual due to cool nights and I spotted the first flock of geese flying south this morning, honking loudly all the way.

This same pattern happened in 2000, my first year in the area. That year, it snowed the day after Halloween, snowed 6 feet in December and it was
-25F on Christmas Eve. January was snow-free, though. Weather statistics are averages, and given that the last 4 to 5 winters have been warmer than normal and snow-free in many spots usually known for it, a cold, snowy winter is overdue.

My friend who runs the 600 acre Pecan Farm in LA says the crop is at least a
week early. Whether that relates to an early fall freeze or not I can't say.

In several of the gardening related forums that I read a number of
folks are discussing the way the weather has turned cooler this year
earlier than normal. It went into the midfifties here in the
Gainesville, FL area last night which is at least several weeks
earlier than we've experienced it here in my experience. This has
gotten me to thinking that we may have first frost earlier than the
average this year so I decided against making the last fertilizer
application on the young citrus so as to not be caught with tender
new growth at frost time.

What do you folks think? Early winter this year or not?

.....Alan.
