Have you thought about planting some Alfalfa there?  You get very, very deep root penetration, and nitrogen fixing.

At least make sure they have plenty of phosphate, potassium and trace minerals.  Water and nice friable soil is helpful too.  I have been throwing burdock tops around some of my fruit trees hoping that burdock will make some nice deep holes in our tight red clay.    Donna
