I admit I can't quite follow your description, but I know what you mean by
grape
canes showing the strain right BEFORE we get them placed where we want. I'd
say if
the split isn't too deep, the vine/cane should be OK. If the grapevine is
"finally
taking off", it should be able to mend this split.
