Doreen,
It may surprise you to know that yesterday was the perfect time to do
this... well, last fall anyway. Roundup won't work on dormant grasses but
there is a time in the fall after the leaves of deciduous woody plants have
dropped but the cool season grasses like quack are still in their fall
growth spirt, though it is winding down. It is never safe to spray
non-woody plants at any time but after the leaves are gone you can safely
spray the invaders of anything with bark as roundup won't be absorbed
through bark. A further benefit to spraying in the late fall is that you
can spray at 2/3 the summer rate as the grasses are then taking everything
down into the roots for winter storage and the weaker solution is just as
effective. Pick a sunny day when it is above 50 F for at least 2 hours and
your quack will stay that nice brown color come spring.
