"Eve's Delight" and "Stark Jumbo" have variously been called "pie maker" apples. SJ is a sport of ED. Both are tip bearers, which makes them hard to manage. Those two are consistent winners of the "Biggest Apple" contest at the Home Orchard Society's Fall Fruit Show. On the other hand, the apple that most often wins the pie contest is Gravenstein with it's excellent flavor. Gravenstein can be quite large, as well, being a triploid apple.

I believe that Gurney's had an apple naming contest some years ago and the Pie Maker was their winning entry...the apple being named (renamed) was the wolf river....
