That's the one I have - it did have a Latin name when I bought it. And yes, the berry is edible but nearly tasteless. I wouldn't have said the leaves resemble clover, but I guess each single leaf looks a bit like one clover leaflet. But since the leaves come in opposite pairs, the overall effect is rather different.

Partridgeberry, Mitchella repens (in the Bedstraw family, Rubiaceae) is

From Grieve, M. 1931, repr. 1976. A modern herbal, on p. 766 we read:Mitchella repens (Linn.) Squaw vine. Synonyms: Partridgeberry.
Checkerberry. Winter clover. Deerberry. One-berry
Part used: Herb
Habitat: United States.
Description: The plant grows in dry woods, among hemlock timber, and in
swampy places; in flower in June and July. The leaves resemble those of
clover and remain green throughout the winter. The fruit or berry also
remains bright scarlet, is edible, and nearly tasteless, dry, and full of
stony seeds. The use of the drug is pecurliarly American.
(Then follows a description of the use of the herb: Constituents, Medical
Action and uses, and dosages).

I read an article that some Canadians are investigating Partridgeberry,
Lowbush Blueberry, Cranberry and Bakeapple with the intention of
developinf
new, superior cultivars (Study No. 300-2129-9901).
I didn't know that Partridgeberries were edible. Do any of you eat
them?
How are they eaten (raw, cooked, etc.)? What are they like? What does it
take to grow them?
