I have a question about "citron".

I have a recipe for a "white fruitcake" in one of my "Southern"
cookbooks that calls for citron, finely chopped. Until recently I
thought that citron was a citrus fruit and that was that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citron
Then in a seed catalogue I read a description of a melon variety that
says the melon is "used to make preserves and "sweetmeats" that are
added to fruitcakes, cookies and puddings."
http://www.seedsavers.org/prodinfo.asp?number=1240(OG)

So which is it? Is the melon lemony-flavored? I have a package of
candied citron, but there is no indication of whether that is citrus or
melon. A little Google-based research is inconclusive. Is it a weed

or a pickle or hog fodder?

Was the catalogue just confused?

Seems like melon or citrus could be used in the recipe.

Thanks for your collective wisdom.

P.S. Is either melon or citrus something that would grow well here in
the mountains of North Carolina?
