In case anyone was curious, the U of MN has a bunch of 'Summercrisp' crossed with various Asian pears.  The trees looked to be at least 20 years old and were fully mature. They appear to be very hardy and the few I tasted were far superior to Summercrisp itself.  If anyone is in regular contact with Dave Bedford, the pome fruit breeder there, ask him if any of these might be introduced soon.  They might be a better bet for mass or market planting in the North than their parents.

Subject: [NAFEX] SummerCrisp Pears?

Hello Again All;

A description of SummerCrisp pears in a Book "fruit growing in the upper midwest" says:

"They must picked on time, or a strong aroma develops and Grit Cells form"

What kind of Strong Aroma ??
A few grit cells or a ton ??

Anybody have one of these ??
I'm looking at buying 10 trees.

Thank you all.........

Richard
