Hi Chris
Five of mine fruited - Pink Princess, Winekist,
Thornberry, Hidden Rose and Pink Pearl. High wind and deer removed the small
fruit from all but two Hidden Rose and about twenty Pink Pearl.
Pink Pearl ripened Sept. 5th, 2 1/2 to 3 ", inside
colour not as dark as last year and not always throughout the apple - very hot
summer, had a great sweet / tart taste though, and very juicy with a good crisp
bite. Skin was soft glowing yellow, red blush on exposed areas to the sun, and
those inside plastic bags were roughly 25% larger than those unbagged. Stems
long enough to accept zip lock bags quite easily. Tree growth is quite
dependable, with average branch growth of 8 to 10 inches per year.
Hidden Rose picked Sept 21, may have ripened
earlier but we were away, with no pink / red colouration in the flesh,
about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches, lighter yellow skin with a smaller blush on sun
exposed areas. Only two that were bagged survived. Had a bland taste with only a
little juice and a softer bite. Rather like Kandil Sinap or Chenango Strawberry.
Stems were a little shorter which made bagging a delicate operation. Personally,
I'm not relying on this year's fruiting habits due to high heat and being a
first year crop, which is sometimes a little "off".
Would love to hear info on how your varieties
performed.
Cheers, Bizmark Storms
