Tom,
If you are buying Fuji in August, they must either be from NZ or Chile OR
they are
last year's crop and ten months old.
Some where I read that they are trying to bring in a law that apples over a
certain age (six months? seven months? eight months?) cannot be sold.

I think the Fuji you got may have been past its prime, or just not a good
one.
What is all the fuss over Fuji apples? I broke down and tried one
yesterday, and the first thing that came to mind was Red Delicious. It
had overtones of the "powdery" flavor I associate with Red Delicious.
Fuji is very juicy, but the flavor is nothing special. It must have great
cost of production values.
