But Tom, don't think of folks like us who seek out fine-tasting and rarer
fruit. When Fujis came along the grocery store apple choices were Red
Delicious, Golden Delicious, tart green Pippin, McIntosh and maybe Rome -
but many markets only carried those first three. Suddenly there were Fujis,
a sweet, crisp, firm, juicy, dessert apple right there in the supermarkets.

I think the Fuji you got may have been past its prime, or just not a good
one. Dave Wilson Nursery scores apples in their regular fruit tastings, and
the Red Fuji has the all-time high score. I've had some really outstanding
ones, much more often than not, with good sweetness, spice, and crispness;
but also had some disappointments, as I have with any variety.

Hello all,

What is all the fuss over Fuji apples? I broke down and tried one
yesterday, and the first thing that came to mind was Red Delicious. It
had overtones of the "powdery" flavor I associate with Red Delicious.
Fuji is very juicy, but the flavor is nothing special. It must have great
cost of production values.

Fuji parentage: Red Delicious and Ralls Janet

Tom
