Bob, Since we live close to each other, I think I will follow your technique. Can you describe your process in more detail? I am interested in the size of the chip you cut from the budwood, the cuts you make on the rootstock, lining up the cambium, wrapping the bud, and early indicators of success. Also, what other Prunus do you have success with in budding from July 20 to August 1? Thanks, Mark Lee, Seattle zone 8a

Harold B Tukey in his book titled Dwarfed Fruit Trees suggests July 20 to August 1 for budding onto Mazzard rootstock for the western New York and southern Michigan areas. He states that the dates my be earlier in a dry season or on light soils and in southern regions. I have been using this schedule for budding here in western Washington for the last 20 years with fairly good success. Note that budding is done in the summer after the scion buds of the current season have matured and before the bark of the rootstock has tightened. I cut the scionwood as I go out to do the budding for a particular variety and discard the soft tipand the buds at the base of the cutting. A good watering of the rootstock before budding will help ensure success. The biggest problem that I have had is having brown rot hitting the buds in the spring when they are about to grow. They need some kind of protective spray. Copper has worked well for me. Bob Hartman, western Washington Mark Lee wrote:
