A thin-skinned avocado might be bad news.  Just last night at dinner, I was told that avocados need little spraying because their thick skin excludes pests.  Hence, if you like to avoid pesticides either organic or conventional avocados are safe to consume.  Of course, living north I do not know this to be true.

Avocado with Edible Skin Makes Its Debut

By Louise Barnett, PA Consumer Affairs Correspondent
An avocado with smooth, black edible skin hit UK shops this week.
Called the Midnight Avocado, it has a fifth less oil than the popular Hass variety which means it contains fewer calories.

The fruit’s skin is less than half the thickness of other varieties of avocado.  At just 0.2 mm thick, it has a mild aniseed flavour and is soft enough to eat.

The Midnight Avocado is grown in the Quinta region of Chile and is exported to Britain by air to protect its delicate skin.

Marks & Spencer fruit buyer Peter Ireland said: “The new Midnight Avocado looks appetising thanks to the contrast of the silky, black skin with the green flesh. It’s very easy to prepare and has a delicious, nutty taste.”

Midnight Avocados went on sale in M&S stores this week priced at £1.99 for two.
