I'm curious: A lot of "organic" growers spray dormant oil. But dormant oil is only effective on insect pests overwintering on trees. None of the three problems you mentioned should be affected by dormant oil, so why spray it?

Here the apple problems are codling moth, fireblight, and some viruses.
Still, even without curculio, it took me years to learn to grow perfect
apples organically. Subclovers and compost for nutrition, timed dormant oil
sprays, traps, and a release of Praying Mantises was the right combo. Yet,
as I slowly plant our new property, I look for resistant varieties of
anything I want to grow, especially apples. I'm two zones warmer here, and
that makes things even more difficult - but I'll still grow them!

Me too. I had ruled out apples because I don't want to
spray and spray and spray. I'm now reconsidering that.

Thanks!
