Title: Hardy peaches and apricots from Latvia

This is an abstract of a paper from the International Workshop on Protection of Genetic Resources of Pomological Plants and Selection of Genitors with Traits Valuable for Sustainable Fruit Production, held in Skierniewice, Poland, Aug. 23-25, 2004.  -- Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn. Apricots and peaches, which by their origin and growing area are southern crops, have been grown in Latvia for several decades.  The first introducers and breeders of these crops were V. Varna at the Botanical Garden of Latvian University and P. Upitis at the Dobele Horticultural Plant Breeding Experimental station (Dobele HPBES).  They started breeding work at the end of 1940-ies of the XX century.

The breeding work is continued at present at Dobele HPBES mainly with P.Upitis’ material.  The breeding of apricots for winterhardiness is done along 2 lines: the selection of late-blossoming hybrids and the selection of hybrids with a maximally long deep dormancy of flower buds . Five late - blossoming forms were selected, which yield rather regularly: ‘Lasma’ (PU-12-9-4), ‘Daiga’ (PU-12-5-4), ‘Dzintars’ (PU-20135), ‘Ritausma’ (U-05064) and ‘Velta’( U2727) , as well as two forms with a longer deep dormancy period: ‘Lasma’ (PU-12-9-4) and PU-16749, which both bear at least some fruits every year.  The selections ‘Lasma’ , ‘Daiga’ and ‘Velta’ have good fruit quality and were registered in Latvia in 1999.  The other selections will be used in breeding for winterhardiness.

As a result of a long-term breeding program at the Botanical Garden of Latvian University several apricot and peach varieties relatively winterhardy and productive in Latvian climate have been obtained.  The best of them – apricots ‘Jausma’ and ‘Rasa’ and peaches ‘Maira’ and ‘Viktors’ were registered in Latvia in 2004.
