Got a question since we have a mulberry thread going. I'm in central IL -
zone 5 and there are lot of "wild" red mulberries around (I don't think
these were originally native?). Pretty tasty and the birds love them.
Well, being in IL and all, I've planted "Illinois Everbearing" three times
from 3 different nurseries (I think all grafted - probably the only way
this tree is sold) and all three have died. They've been in a creek bottom
with deep, loamy soil that drains pretty well. I've tried moving them
around, but not to a significantly different micro-climate. I recently
bought 2 acres from my neighbor that are "upland" - more regular soil and
topography for this area.
Any ideas on what my problems have been or where I should try planting them
and/or sources for plants that would do well in central IL?
Thanks!
Mark
