Lon,

I'd like to hear how the Lady Bugs populations are for different
locations this year. So far there have been fewer moving in for the winter
here than last year, which was a little too much company for a guy who
lives in the country. That may not be the last word as I still see them in
the orchard and the grapes though the fruit is almost gone now. The next
warm, sunny day with calm winds will tell, but there won't be many more
like that.
For removal from the grapes I have had the best luck shucking the
berries, bugs and all, off the clusters into pails and then providing an
exit via thin strips of wood angled into the berries and out of the pail.
The bugs get warmed up and active inside overnight and climb out of the
grapes onto the strips to either fly away (some) or await removal along
with the strips in the morning (most). Its rewarding to see them crowded
onto these mini-planks like survivors on the flotsam of a shipwreck. Then I
crush (the grapes - no further reward is necessary) and proceed normally
with the wine.
