The following article, from the Oct. 18, 2004 Edinburgh, Scotland, Evening News, provides an example of how NAFEX members might stimulate demand for the old apple cultivars they grow. -- Sam

FRUIT lovers in the Capital have the chance to taste a variety of unusual and rare apples to celebrate National Apple Day.

The Edinburgh Community Food Initiative has arranged for 20 forgotten types of the fruit to be distributed to more than a dozen community food co-operatives.

The free apples, which have been sourced from the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale in Kent, will be handed out with information and recipe ideas this Thursday.

John Brennan, senior health promotion specialist with the ECFI, said: "Most people feel that supermarkets open up a world of choice when it comes to the variety of foods we have access to.  Sadly, supermarket policies may be restricting our access to the wide variety of foods that can be grown on our very own doorstep.

"Take apples, for example.  The National Fruit Collection grows over 2500 varieties but can you name more than six varieties you can buy from a supermarket?

"To celebrate National Apple Day, and to continue to promote local seasonal produce, ECFI is giving people the opportunity to try some of these forgotten varieties."

Apples on offer include the James Grieve variety, which was originally cultivated in Edinburgh but is now virtually unknown.
