I grew Roxbury Russet here in SW Iowa (Zone 4-5) and did not have very good
success with it. I have had much better success with Golden Russet and a
variety called English Golden Russet. Last year my Ashmead's Kernal was
probably the best apple in my orchard. Judson L. Frisk

I have also had a very positive experience with Roxbury Russet as it shows
resistance to CAR and FB as well as most other disease problems. Most
russeted apples seem to have fewer problems than other apples. They also
tend to be sweeter with more intense flavor. I'm surprised that they aren't
more popular with the public. I'm sure that it has to do with the fixation
on "red" apples with smooth skins. (This is in zone 5 in northern Ohio.)

In /Old Southern Apples/, Lee Calhoun reports that the Roxbury Russet
"was perhaps the most widely grown russet in the South." More
importantly, he states that it "bears heavily annually and is healthy
and resistant to several apple diseases, including cedar-apple rust and
scab."
