I received very nice (and inexpensive) P. americana seedlings from Oikos Tree Crops (http://www.oikostreecrops.com/). Ken's stock is selected for the more northern climes (Michigan, anyway). I was planning on growing out as many as I can and selecting a few which have fruiting characteristics that I like, and topworking a few of the 'rejects'. I'm kind of hoping they will sucker, I'm using it as a hedge...
I'd choose my parents carefully if using this as an understock for a 'real' orchard. Might as well start with seedlings that have a good chance of being well adapted. In my case, Oikos is about 70 miles to the west of me at the same latitude, so I was pretty happy to find these.
