A group of garden educators, community activists, and university folks have
begun meeting to gauge the possibility for an "urban orchard" in Madison --
basically a network of small fruit gardens at schools, parks and other
publically accessible properties. The goals have not yet been formalized,
but one that seems agreed upon is to educate children and other community
members about growing fruit and offering them the opportunity to take care
of trees, brambles and vines from planting to harvest (or pruning to harvest
in the case of existing trees) -- and, of course, to enjoy that harvest and
possibly share it with the community through food pantries, harvest
festivals and so forth.
I attended the organizing meeting in my writerly capacity. The organizers
would be thrilled to have some MGs get involved in this project. Below [*] are
the notes from the meeting. You can contact the coordinator, Phyllis
Hasbrouck, directly with questions or enthusiasm. Her e-mail is below [*]
[* I will Forward these notes and the contact info to interested NAFEXers. --tc ].
