- Subject: [NAFEX] electric chicken wire?

Yep, after the racoons decimated our first and best corn patch (our 2 acre electric fence was undergoing repair) I came up with electric chicken wire just around the late corn. Works like a charm.
Why mention it here? They like fruit - and this idea might work equally well on grapes or trees.
I bought 1.5" white pvc water pipe (about $3.00 per 10' stick) cut it to appropriate lengths and drilled a small hole in the top end. I pounded those into the ground about 10 to 12' apart, stuck a wire in the hole and hung 2' chicken wire to within 2" of the ground. Ran a hot wire over from the electric fence. (ours is a Red Snapper remote solar, said to be good for 10 miles of actual wire). I think a 1' strip of chicken wire would be just as effective - and would double the length possible before weakening the spark. Better yet would be 'turkey wire' also called 2" chicken wire, and half the price. Of course this only really works if one has no weeds or has a 'weed burner' charger. But then it is just for that short time when things are ripening up.
There are just too many racoons here too hope to trap them all. And.......having once had a pet racoon, the most amazing animal I have ever been around, killing them now is admittedly tough to do.
