Tom,

Did anyone offer an explanation ? Here's mine. In non-botanical, non-technical terms...

When we prune in the spring, root reserves and the long sunny days work together to rapidly replace what was removed. We then see (on healthy trees, at least) suckers & water sprouts and other rapid regrowth.

When we prune in the summer-late summer, trees are in the part of the year when they are putting reserves back into the roots, rather than building more leaf area. We reduce the amount of reserves being put into the roots, thus reducing overall vigor.

BUT, too ambitious of a summer-pruning can put things out of balance, and cause either tree death or vigorous spring growth.

Other nafexers, please correct the above as needed !

Hello,

Could someone explain or define what is meant by fall (late summer) pruning reducing vigor.

Thank you,
Tom
