Title: Re: [NAFEX] maybe 'hornworm'
There are several species of so-called Sphinx moths that have caterpillars resembling those of the tomato hornworm.  The T.H. is pretty much limited to tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and other members of the nightshade family, but some of the related species will feed on other plants.  Probably you have one of the other species.  If you're a collector, some of the related species have absolutely breathtaking adults.  The larvae pretty much all transform to adults underground and a deep cultivation in the fall or early spring will usually get most of them.

What about the 'hornworms' e.g. tomato hornworm? Usually you only find one
or two and they completely defoliate plants in hours. They are big and
bright green and have a 'horn' on the back. They are not limited to tomatoes
and I have found them on fuchsias and a weed which I think was a member of
the fireweed family.
