ARGHH!!!!!

I sent the message to the list that was supposed to go to the person
who was suspended and vice versa. Sorry if anyone was upset by my
error.

Here's what I originally intended to send:
GREG
----------------------------------------------

Dear List:

The message below was sent to someone who passed a virus to the list.
Almost certainly it was an unintended, and careless, mistake. This
is the message YOU will get if you send a virus to the list. I'll
make the following points.

1. There is no excuse in this day and age for not running an anti-
virus program. It is important to keep it updated, which for all but
the obsessive-compulsive usually means AUTOMATIC UPDATES. If you use
email, use an anti-virus. Some may choose to argue the point--that
is your perogative. You may wish to save your breath, however,
because if send a virus to this list you get two tries (including a
final two month BAN) before being permanently banned. No exceptions--
no points for effort or good intentions.

2. IBIBLIO does not have an option that I can find that allows
exclusion of attachments. This is now the fourth server for this
list, and while it's sure to generate some discussion, those offering
suggestions for a move should be prepared to consider COST (are you
willing to pay for this list?) and other options (privacy policy,
advertisements, etc.)

3. While most will get additional chances to set things right, why
not do the thing that's easiest in the long run and use an anti-virus
program? It just doesn't make sense anymore not to use one.

----------------------------------------

Sorry, your computer is currently infected with the Klez virus. In
the overwhelming majoirity of cases viruses are propagated
unwittingly by users with no malicious intent. However, it is your
responsibility to clean up this infection before you resubscribe to
the list. DO NOT PANIC. Although it is an unpleasant education, it
is possible with minimal to moderate effort to get back to normal.

The presumption is NO ILL INTENT on your part. You are almost
certainly an innocent victim. Do not feel the need to apologize to
the list.

There are multiple steps that you can take to disinfect your
computer. Several of the antivirus sites (on the internet) have free
cleaning programs, but I would advise you to run an antivirus in the
background AT ALL TIMES HENCEFORTH.

Since the Ibiblio list does not automatically remove attachments, the
Klez virus was forwarded to subscribers of this list. You have been
unsubscribed from the list by the administrator to prevent the
(almost certain) multiple bombardments that your email program will
send out every time you start it up. Send all communications to
nafex-owner@lists.ibiblio.org, as you will no longer be able to send
messages to the list.

Do not resubscribe until you are CERTAIN that the virus has been
cleansed from your system. It is unlikely that you can clean the
virus by normal file operations (file deletions, etc.) and are
strongly advised to get a specialized program (Do a google search for
"KLEZ" and you will get multiple links. One I can advise is

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.
html

Look for the tool to clean your system.

IF YOU REJOIN THE LIST AND THE KLEZ VIRUS IS RETRANSMITTED FROM YOUR
ADDRESS YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS WILL BE PLACED ON THE "BANNED" LIST AND
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESUBSCRIBE. THIS BAN WILL BE IN EFFECT FOR
TWO MONTHS TO ALLOW YOU TO TAKE FURTHER STEPS TO CLEANSE YOUR
COMPUTER. IF YOU RESUBSCRIBE AFTER THE BAN IS LIFTED AND THE KLEZ
VIRUS IS *ONCE MORE* RETRANSMITTED THAT EMAIL ADDRESS WILL BE
PERMANENTLY BANNED.

This may sound harsh (although others might say to lenient) but as
there are good solutions to prevent the KLEZ virus from being spread,
you should get it fixed the first try, and if you don't get it fixed
the second try, you will need to resubscribe under a different email
address.

Good luck and best regards,

GREG MILLER
