Title: Re: [NAFEX] Re: Doc Farwell's grafting seal I wrap chip buds with strips of plastic. The easiest type is just to cut some about 1/4 to 3/8 inch wide from a plastic freezer bag. With a little practice you can wrap the chip leaving just the bud protruding. Wrap it by going over the starting end a couple of times, then when you are done, tuck the end under a loop, such as with regular budding. When the buds grow and the shoots are 2 inches long or so, slit the plastic with a sharp blade and just leave it - it will fall off as the shoot grows.

What methods do people use to keep chip bud grafts from drying out? I have
been trying this grafting technique for the first time and don't have a
method yet for sealing the graft.

I have less grafting experience than most people on the list, but I bought
Doc Farwell's this year and think it's great stuff for an amateur to have on
hand. I wrapped a number of bark grafts and whip grafts with parafilm and
used Farwells to seal the ends of the parafilm and any exposed cut wood. I
can see it would be excellent for budding, but haven't done any with it. I
had tried some whip and tongue grafts on apples, using only Farwells to hold
the grafts, but that was a complete failure. If I had to give up either
parafilm or Farwells, the Farwells would have to go. But it's nice to have
both.
