Title: Re: [NAFEX] Edible Hawthorns
For sheer size, the giant Chinese hawthorns, Crataegus pinnatifida major are really impressive.  The fruits can be 2 inches in diameter.  I have a few of them and they make a great show, both in bloom and in fruit.
I've been learning more about Mayhaws as well.  Grafted some on Washington haw and they are very slow growing on that species, making a tree no more than 8 or 9 feet high.  When I grafted some on the native Oregon C. douglasii, the mayhaw made more growth in one year than the same thing on Washington haw did in five years.  Interestingly, the Oregon haw has a very similar leaf to the mayhaw.

I've got one seedling from seed that Donna Hudson sent me, and she'd gotten
hers from another mutual acquaintance in NJ.  Had meant to purchase some
scions from Richard this winter, but never got around to placing an order.
Maybe next year...
