Mike,
I have established oyster mushrooms by seeding cottonwood logs with spawn.
Saw a local old timer do it a few years ago and tried it. It does take about
a year to get a crop. Simply drive a wedge and create a split in a dead
cottonwood log, insert the spawn, remove the wedge so that the split closes
tight. Just putting the spawn in existing cracks etc. also seems to work.
This was done in the spring when logs were moist and likely works best under
those conditions. Don't know what other types of wood oysters like to live
on but I am sure they are not specific to cottonwood.
