Title: Re: [NAFEX] Root Grafting
I did some of this one time.   The main problem is that if you bury the union, the scion roots and you get a standard size tree.  But if you leave a piece of the root above ground, it's very apt to sunburn, at least in the first year, and you get dead areas on it.   It has been a long time since I did it, though, and I think some of the new latex grafting compounds might protect the graft and prevent sunburn.  Basically, it's an emergency method unless a standard size tree isn't a problem.

Subject: [NAFEX] Root Grafting

I am interested in any tips, thoughts and sites on root grafting of trees.
I have not tried it but not having rootstock to graft to but I have the
varieties I need I would like to try root grafting. I have found some info
in books etc. They dig up roots same size as scions use 3 to 6 inch piece to
make graft and bury root and graft in soil.
