I have grown the Champanel for 5 years in LA and 3 yrs in AL, zones 8 & 7
respectively. I like it VERY much for jelly which I think is far superior to
Concord in taste. The vines got some 'dead arm'in LA but they always mader a
crop. No spraying was conducted on a regular basis. There was one yr that
leafroller was bad and I sprayed once. I have not sprayed here yet and had
my first crop last year. Yes, leave fruit on as long as you can without loss
for best taste fresh off the vine.
Previous articles in Pomona or SFF bragged on it as well.

and only good for jelly from someone who pulled their vines up to "an
excellent grape to eat if allowed to fully ripen(about 2 weeks after it
turns blue") from Womack nursery where I bought it. I picked champanel
because it is reputed not to require spraying for black rot vs black spanish
and blanc du bois that do (George Ray McEachern "Growing Fruits, Berries,
and Nuts in the South".)
