Sam Powers is a treasure trove of info on growing things. That is why I
chose to profile him in the article on NAFEX I did in the Aug/Sept 2002
issue of Mother Earth News. His five acres are like the Garden of Eden. If
you are lucky enough to sample his fruits, you'll want to grow everything.
The blackberries are outstanding, and so are the peaches. Watch out for the
jujubes, though! Sam is always trying to palm them off! Seriously, it
great to hear that someone is documenting all of Sam's information. I only
touched on a small part, his experiences with peaches. Sam and Ginger
experiment with everything and gather much wisdom. When they started
growing Oriental fruits, they made friends with Chinese and Viet Nam people
in Houston to learn. And, they make a leap of faith often and just jump in.
Ginger once planted the seeds from a star fruit she bought at the grocery
store. A year later, there was a 12-foot-tall carombola in the greenhouse
and fresh star fruit to eat. She also has an outstanding collection of
antique roses, including some historic Texas ones that came from the
original spots where they were either named or discovered. The Powers have
much wisdom to share.

Sam's jujubes.

of fruit trees. For example, they have 30 varieties of jujube. I am
currently posting their write-ups for how to grow feijoas, gumi, jujube,
papaya, blueberries, bananas, loquat, apples, pomegranates, raspberries,
blackberries, pears, oriental pears, persimmons, figs, many kinds of citrus,
mayhaw, quince, and others. Impressive!
