Hello all, I've been following the discussion for a month or more now,
enjoying hearing about the many fruits and trees I've never even heard of
before. I plan an orchard of roughly half an acre and then I hope another of
2 acres or more in the years to come. In researching the varieties for my
climate I've become confused about hardiness, why are there just so many
varied temperatures for a single species. Having recently been reading about
figs (Ficus carica) I discovered they're only hardy to -4C, yet they've been
growing well this year with no apparent damage from last winter when
temperatures were -8C! (young and mature trees alike).

Is there an established source for reliable data (preferably available on
the web) or are there just too many factors controlling hardiness for a
reliable figure to be given?

Looking forward to your responses and learning more over the coming months
(and years).

Hector,

How cold of a freeze have your feijoa survived? How old are they and
have they ever flowered or fruited? We saw some growing as a hedge at
the Norfolk Botanical Garden--beautiful. I have some small potted plants
that i might eventually try putting outside here in PA zone 6 in a
sheltered location.
