Title: Re: [NAFEX] Bearing Age of Date Trees That's actually true, FROM SEED, but not for all dates. The 80 years to bearing is the upper extreme, though many take 20 years or more to bear from seed. That's one reason dates are grown from offshoots (called pups) of bearing trees - offshoots come into bearing sooner. The California Rare Fruit Growers have had some very good articles on dates, just a couple of issues back. Go to http://www.crfg.org to find out when the article was in the magazine.

Subject: [NAFEX] Bearing Age of Date Trees
My neighbor came over today with a story about a certain kind of date
tree that takes 80 years to bear fruit. The story illustrated how
important knowledge is passed from generation to generation in some
cultures.
Before I could stop myself I found myself doubting the validity of the
story. I really don't know but it seems against the very nature of the
plant kingdom for any species to take 80 year to mature.
Anyone know of any plant that takes that long to bear fruit?
